Home Life
I’m married to a high school principal, and we call Alabama home. We have four grown children, a son-in-law, and two spoiled grandsons. I play the piano in my spare time and enjoy playing my keyboard publicly. I was involved in show choir and took piano when I was in school. However, I stopped taking music lessons when I was raising a family. I began taking piano again via Zoom during the Covid lockdowns and have taken lessons from four brilliant instructors over these years. They are from all over – Canada, US, Hungary, and Spain. I love the diversity that comes with Zoom!
Where I Got My Start
The first fonts I designed were used with pen tools in cardmaking. Back then, a group of us who used Pazzles machines were crazy about single line fonts, which I had learned to make using their software program. I made over 30 of those fonts, but they were only for use in that program, with that brand of machine. Many of the fonts I now have on the Single Line Fonts site were based off the shapes of those earlier ones. I remember going to a learning retreat that Pazzles had. The women there were exclaiming, “The font lady is here!” Their enthusiasm was contagious! Now, as you know, my fonts are compatible with Cricut, Silhouette, Solo, and other cutters. We were doing single line fonts before they were even cool (grin)!
I love finding new industries and crafts in which my work can be used. Sign makers, card makers, engraving shops, print houses, trophy houses, manufacturing companies, and even a headstone company are a few of the artisans and companies who use my fonts. It delights me, too, to see my fonts being used in other countries. I’ve sold fonts to a custom yacht builder and an aeronautical engineer for putting serial numbers and text on parts. See the mind-boggling photo that was sent to me by the aeronautical engineer. The letters are smaller than the tip of the toothpick in the pic.
My Other Business and Background
Aside from fonts, I have a decal business called Sage and Serendipity, and I sell on Amazon and Etsy. I started this back when my husband was coaching in 2015 and we created some sports decals for fundraising. I enjoyed making them so much that I posted a few things on Etsy, and then it grew into a business. I made other high school team decals, including ones for Radford, VA’s varsity boys basketball team. I’ve had several interesting large orders for tumbler decals, including one for a professional hockey team (Chicago Blackhawks) and one for a large organic supplement company’s employee mugs. Their initial order was for 1200 3-inch name decals!
I was a Virtual Assistant and created some designs for a vinyl company. I’ve served on the Pazzles Design Team and have done some design work for Sawgrass.
I also had a retail store which closed in the year 2015. One side of that business was a mastectomy supply boutique with wigs, and the other side served as various retail ventures. For several years, we had a baby and children’s clothing store on that side. At one time mom sold fabric, and I even sold scrapbooking supplies for a few years. All in all, my mother and I owned that business for about 25 years.
As you can imagine, it was quite a change to go from a brick-and-mortar biz to making decals from my home. Mom was able to come onboard and during the Christmas season of 2016, there were seven of us working from my home. Some days we filled over 200 orders in a day, and Jon and I pulled a few all-nighters that year.
Besides scrapbooking/cardmaking, I love sign making and photography. I also love to quilt and sew, although I confess to not having the time for anything fabric related in quite some time. My sewing machine is currently sitting in my work room, having been used to make some cards the other day!
